Hexahydrocannabinol HHC Cannabinoid

The future of cannabinoids is here with new, hemp derived cannabinoids sweeping the nation.  Alternative cannabinoids such as Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) and Delta-8 Tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta 8 THC) are showing to be the preferred cannabinoids nowadays compared CBD from yesteryear.

Known as 11-Nor-9β-hydroxyhexahydrocannabinol (11-Nor-9beta-HHC or 9-OH-HHC) in the science community, the “HHC” acronym became the common name due to the shared “HHC” syntax which provides us with clarity for origins of it’s unique naming convention; sometimes likened to that of THC.

The HHC cannabinoid is considered a minor cannabinoid of more than 100+ cannabinoids which is found in the industrial hemp plant.  HHC is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in hemp, and can also be synthesized from hemp-derived Delta 8 THC.  What makes HHC awesome is that it also provides psychotropic effects similar to that of traditional cannabis.

The key difference between HHC and the psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis, Delta 9 THC, is simply the additional hydrogenated carbons.  With added hydrogen molecules to the Delta 8 THC compound, it creates a chemical reaction to provide euphoric effects for the user.

This cutting-edge compound also leverages a hydrogenation process which is a technique used for ages to improve a longer shelf life for consumer goods. By simply adding hydrogen atoms to a Delta 8 THC molecule, the hydrogenated cannabinoids provide the user with both– psychoactive effects and a longer shelf life for a product that helps them to “get high.”

What is HHC?

Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) occurs naturally in the pollen of hemp plants.  The hydrogenated compound is comprised of simply hydrogen molecules, scientifically.  When this occurs, HHC joins the number of psychotropic cannabinoids in the hemp family and provides users with a legal way to enjoy the similar effects of using top-shelf marijuana.

So what is HHC anyway?

HHC is hemp derived THC, in it’s hydrogenated form.  The chemical structure of HHC is so similar to the THC molecule that you can barely tell the difference, and the double bonds of the molecule look very similarly in a microscope, too!

Preliminary research into the cannabis compound shows us that the double bonds of the THC molecule has such a similar chemical structure to that of HHC that even the endocannabinoid receptors (within the endocannabinoid system of the human body) can’t tell the difference between the two.  The binding affinity of HHC to the CB1 receptors acts nearly the same at the molecular level.

Hemp derived cannabinoids have been studied for years, starting with research from Roger Adams back in the 20th century, but minor oxygenated cannabinoids is a discovery that can be credited to the 21st century.  Anecdotal evidence shows that HHC is one of the natural cannabinoids in hemp, but are considered inactive HHC molecules in the wild.  HHC is still considered a stable compound with the molecular structure able to also be produced in a lab.

HHC molecules look and act very similar to Delta 9 THC molecules.  Effects are similar for the user, too.  Both HHC and THC will get you high.  Natural THC produce HHC whenever it’s hydrogenated.

How is HHC produced?

HHC is produced from hydrogenating Delta 8 THC from hemp-derived CBD.

HHC molecules differ a bit from Delta 9 THC due to the hydrogenation.    With HHC, we notice that there are two more hydrogen atoms found in the left-most ring of the molecule, as shown below:

With the hydrogenation process, we notice that the molecular structure is almost the exact same as Delta 9 THC.  By saturating the Delta 9 THC molecule with hydrogen atoms, the transformation into HHC occurs without affecting the effect profile much for the user, in the process.

Hydrogenation is often likened to the comparison of what margarine is to butter: it’s the same process, and the product changes slightly throughout the process.  Hydrogenation extends the shelf-life of margarine (compared to butter) and the same is true for the extension of shelf-life of HHC (compared to Delta 9 THC).  The end result is an awesome product, safe to consume and provides similar effects to that of Delta 9 THC.

Is HHC safe to consume?

The hemp derived cannabinoid, HHC, hasn’t been studied thoroughly however anecdotal evidence is suggesting that HHC is safe to consume and use regularly.  There are many forms of cannabinoids makeup the cannabinoid market, and we know you have questions as it concerns psychoactive cannabinoids!

The cannabis industry is evolving.  Nowadays, customers can choose between cannabis cannabinoids or hemp-derived cannabinoids.  Both have similar effects, however, the legalities differ for cannabis on a state-by-state level.  The cannabis industry will continue to provide the cannabinoids the market craves.  Lucky for you, you don’t have rely on living in a legal state for cannabis when there are psychoactive cannabinoids available to buy online without the hassle!

What kinds of effects does HHC provide?

HHC produces feelings of euphoria we all know and love, along with many therapeutic effects for the body.  THC-like effects are due to the hydrogenated version of THC, HHC.  HHC effects, include:

  • potent antinociceptive activity
  • pharmacological effects
  • restorative sleep

All cannabinoids are continuously being studied and more innovations in cannabis related products are sure to be offered in the coming years!

How powerful is HHC?

The cannabinoid products early studies show that there are powerful HHC products which provide equal, if not significantly more powerful, effects for the users when in use.

HHC products come in all forms, including, HHC vapes, dabs, flower and more.  Similar to marijuana strains, there are strain options for HHC products, too.   If you’re in the market, shop the products that work for your lifestyle for best results!

Does HHC show up on a drug test?

Pure HHC is great, but it won’t help you pass drug tests.  There have been stories on Reddit of people that have been driven to use HHC (instead of marijuana) due to their belief that the use of HHC will help them evade drug tests.  This is a false belief, unfortunately.  You can not expect to elude drug tests by using HHC.  That is because most urine analyses will measure THC metabolites with drug tests, and it has been shown that the use of HHC will put you at greater risk to pop hot!

Is HHC legal?

HHC legal questions arise in this area of specialty cannabinoids, so we want to shed some light about the topic being cannabinoid experts.  Due to the language of the 2018 Farm Bill, HHC is legal as long as the product doesn’t contain more than the federal level limit of .3% Delta-9.

The cannabis plant and hemp plant both produce cannabinoids.  Hemp derived cannabinoids are legal, and cannabis derived cannabinoids are not legal.  A hemp derived cannabinoid containing less than the Delta 9 THC limit of .3% is legal, according to the 2018 Farm Bill.  As long as the product being consumed originates from industrial hemp, it is not in jeopardy of being at risk with the Federal Analogue Act, neither.

Trace concentrations of HHC occurs naturally, but it’s really not enough to get high.  The cannabis plant has a cousin: hemp plants.  Cannabis plants are illegal at the federal level, however, industrial hemp, like a high potency cannabis sativa, is federally legal.

Hemp is federally legal as long as the Delta-9 concentration limit is not exceeded.  Hemp-derived cannabinoids are expected to remain legal, despite some cannabinoids being psychoactive in nature.  Legal adult use states have enjoyed the benefits of legal cannabis and hemp for years, and now everyone else in all 50 states can enjoy this exciting new cannabinoids now that HHC legal concerns have been resolved.

It’s not rocket science but it is science, and we as experts in psychoactive cannabinoids at HHC Spot want to share our expertise for why HHC is such a great new offering to lifestyle and world peace, in general. Below are more questions we receive about the HHC cannabinoid.

What is Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC)?

HHC is the newest addition to the family of hemp-derived cannabinoids. It’s often found in edibles, but it can also be taken as a vaporized or inhaled product. HHC is generally thought of as being less potent than delta 8 THC, which has led many people to experiment with it for its low risk factor. However, this misconception couldn’t be farther from reality: HHC actually packs a punch up to 10 times stronger than THC! The tricky part is that users don’t know when they are high on HHC because there are no visible side effects or physical changes associated with use—this means that it may take longer for the person ingesting the substance to realize what’s going on…

How HHC is made?

HHC is the hydrogenated form of THC. HHC is made from Delta-8-THC from hemp-derived CBD, in most cases. Specifically, HHC Flower is hemp flower with HHC distillate sprayed on the flower.
